The curriculum defines the qualification profile, the scope and duration, the curricular part, the examination regulations, etc. Please note that the English version of the curriculum is for your information only. It proofs the capability of doing research on one\u2019s own, that one has mastered the scientific methods and is capable of solving scientific problems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Structure_of_the_Programme\"><\/span>Structure of the Programme<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The doctoral program has a total of <strong>180 ECTS<\/strong>&nbsp;and is aimed at a duration (Regelstudiendauer) of <strong>three years<\/strong>.<\/li><li>The doctoral program includes the <strong>completion of courses<\/strong>&nbsp;within the <strong>curricular part<\/strong>, the <strong>writing of the thesis<\/strong>&nbsp;and the <strong>defence of the thesis<\/strong> (Rigorosum).<\/li><li>The curricular part consists of courses for a total of 18 ECTS.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>1 ECTS (European Credit Transfer System) is equivalent to 25 to 30 working hours. The amount of work of a student in an academic year is estimated to be approx. 1500 to 1800 hours. This corresponds to 60 ECTS per year. This is the reason for the official program length of three years. Thus a doctoral program has not necessarily to last for three years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Essentially, the courses for the curricular part can be selected by the doctoral candidate themselves. Question regarding the selection of courses and lectures might be answered <a href=\"https:\/\/fsdr.at\/index.php\/required-coursework\/\">here<\/a>. Your supervisor and the dean of studies have to agree. Most faculties have particular guidelines or requirements regarding the courses, these are listed <a href=\"https:\/\/fsdr.at\/index.php\/curricular-part-guidelines-by-the-faculties\/\">here<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Each field of study could have additional requirements for the doctoral study. This affects for example the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.informatik.tuwien.ac.at\/dekanat\/doktoratsstudium-neu\">Faculty of Informatics<\/a>, or the <a href=\"https:\/\/ar.tuwien.ac.at\/content\/download\/424\/file\/Richtlinie_Dr_Studium.pdf\">Faculty of Architecture.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Please check with your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tuwien.at\/en\/tu-wien\/organisation\/faculties-and-institutes\/\">dean\u2019s office (Dekanatszentrum)<\/a> to see if there are any requirements for your program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Received_Academic_Degree\"><\/span>Received Academic Degree<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Depending on the completed doctoral program, the following degrees are awarded at TU Wien: \u201cDoktor der Naturwissenschaften\u201d (doctor of natural sciences), abbr. \u201cDr. rer. nat.\u201d, \u201cDoktor der Sozial- und Wirtschaftswissenschaften\u201d (doctor of social and economic sciences), abbr. \u201cDr. rer. soc. oec.\u201d and \u201cDoktor der Technischen Wissenschaften\u201d (doctor of technical sciences), abbr. \u201cDr. techn.\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Course_of_Action\"><\/span>Course of Action<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>After finding a supervisor, applying for admission to the doctoral programme and your enrollment, we would suggest the following timeline for your study:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1350\" height=\"1111\" src=\"https:\/\/fsdr.at\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/timeline.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-442\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>As mentioned above, some faculties can have additional requirements for the doctoral program, which could change the timeline. This is the case for all doctoral candidates at the Faculty of Informatics.
