What are my options for public health insurance?<\/a><\/li><li class='ez-toc-page-1 ez-toc-heading-level-3'><a class=\"ez-toc-link ez-toc-heading-17\" href=\"https:\/\/fsdr.at\/index.php\/miscellaneous\/#Is_there_any_age_limit_for_starting_a_PhD\" title=\"Is there any age limit for starting a PhD?\">Is there any age limit for starting a PhD?<\/a><\/li><\/ul><\/nav><\/div>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Which_doctoral_programmes_exist\"><\/span>Which doctoral programmes exist?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>There are three doctoral programmes at the TU Wien, which only differ in the name of the degree and are otherwise <em>equivalent<\/em>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Doctor of technical sciences (<em>Dr. techn.<\/em> \u2013 <em>doctor\/doctrix technic\u00e6,<\/em> E796): this is the most common doctoral programme and is intended for alumni of technical studies.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Doctor of (natural) sciences (<em>Dr. rer. nat.<\/em> \u2013 <em>doctor\/doctrix rerum naturalium<\/em>, E791): This programme is intended for applicants with science degrees.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Doctor of social and economic sciences (<em>Dr. rer. soc. oec.<\/em> \u2013 <em>doctor\/doctrix rerum socialium oeconomicarumque<\/em>, E784): This programme is intended for applicants with social or economic degrees.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Is_the_doctoral_programme_assigned_to_a_certain_scientific_degree\"><\/span>Is the doctoral programme assigned to a certain scientific degree?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In the process of&nbsp;admission, the doctoral programme has to be assigned to a certain field of study. The ID of the doctoral programme (e.g. E786) is then assigned to the respective&nbsp;field of study. For example, in technical physics (formerly programme ID E810), the complete ID will then be E 786 810.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Usually, the most convenient way to be assigned to a certain programme is to contact the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tuwien.at\/en\/tu-wien\/organisation\/central-divisions\/admission-office\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.tuwien.at\/en\/tu-wien\/organisation\/central-divisions\/admission-office\">admission office<\/a> and tell them your field of study. That way, the correct dean of studies will be informed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Which_doctoral_programme_will_I_be_assigned_to\"><\/span><a><\/a>Which doctoral programme will I be assigned to?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Unfortunately, there are no fixed guidelines, so this is decided at the point of admission on a case-by-case basis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For TU Wien graduates, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tuwien.at\/en\/tu-wien\/organisation\/central-divisions\/admission-office\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.tuwien.at\/en\/tu-wien\/organisation\/central-divisions\/admission-office\">admission office<\/a> decides in most cases.<br>For graduates of other universities, the dean of studies has the last word. They usually apply the following criteria:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Major field\/field of studies of the master&#8217;s degree<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Field of study assigned to the doctoral programme (see the <a href=\"https:\/\/tiss.tuwien.ac.at\/curriculum\/studyCodes.xhtml?locale=en\">list of programmes for each field<\/a>)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In most cases, TU Wien graduates will be assigned to the programme <em>&#8220;Dr. techn. \u2013 doctor\/doctrix technic\u00e6, E786&#8221;<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_do_I_need_to_consider_before_applying_for_the_doctoral_programme_of_social_and_economic_sciences_Dr_rer_soc_oec\"><\/span><a><\/a>What do I need to consider before applying for the doctoral programme of social and economic sciences (<em>Dr. rer. soc. oec.<\/em>)?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This is in principle possible, though quite unusual in practice for the following reasons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You need a master&#8217;s degree that is related to your doctoral field of study, as all doctoral studies need to be assigned a field of study present at TU Wien. However, TU Wien does not offer any master programmes in economics, macroeconomics or social sciences, which makes the admission process more complicated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Furthermore, you need to find a supervisor related to your desired thesis topic. Eventually, you also have to take additional courses (see <a href=\"https:\/\/fsdr.at\/index.php\/required-coursework\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/fsdr.at\/index.php\/required-coursework\/\">required coursework<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Which_curriculum_is_applicable\"><\/span><a><\/a>Which curriculum is applicable?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>There is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tuwien.at\/fileadmin\/Assets\/dienstleister\/studienabteilung\/Doktoratsstudium\/Doktoratsstudium_2022.pdf\">common curriculum<\/a> (in German) for all students of all three doctoral programmes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Are_the_courses_for_PhDs_held_in_English\"><\/span><a><\/a>Are the courses for PhDs held in English?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>There are both English and German courses at the TU Wien. While almost all undergraduate courses are held in German, many graduate-level courses\u2014which typically are the ones interesting for you\u2014are offered in English (though to which degree depends on the field).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We recommend to check the language for each lecture of your interest before getting the dean of studies&#8217; approval. Can I enroll for a doctoral programme at the TU Wien?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Yes<\/em>. The prerequisites are the same for alumni of the TU Wien and other universities, however you need to apply for admission at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tuwien.at\/en\/tu-wien\/organisation\/central-divisions\/admission-office\">admission office<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally, you need find a supervisor for your thesis which is a Professor at the TU Wien (o. Univ.-Prof., a. o. Univ.-Prof., Assoc.-Prof. or Priv. Doz.).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Please note that that your doctoral studies need to be assigned to a field of study present at the&nbsp;TU Wien and you need a master&#8217;s degree that is related to that field. If you, e.g., want to enroll for the doctoral programme in the field of Chemistry, you need a master&#8217;s degree in Chemistry (or related).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"I_have_a_degree_at_a_technical_college_Fachhochschule_FH_Can_I_enroll_for_a_doctoral_programme_at_the_TU_Wien\"><\/span><a><\/a>I have a degree at a technical college&nbsp;(Fachhochschule, FH). Can I enroll for a doctoral programme at the TU Wien?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Yes, this is possible if the degree is related to a field of study present at the TU Wien. You can find the application form <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tuwien.at\/fileadmin\/Assets\/dienstleister\/studienabteilung\/Formulare_2022\/2022_Ansuchen_Dr_aufuellbar.pdf\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the case of admission, you might be required to do additional courses depending on the duration of your previous studies and the relevancy of your degree to your chosen field. You will find such requirements in your admission notice issued by the dean of studies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are some Austrian FH degrees that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aq.ac.at\/de\/ueber-uns\/dokumente-ueber-uns\/VO-BGBl--II-Nr--87_2013.pdf\">automatically admit you for the doctoral programmes<\/a> (link in German). You may still be asked to do up to 60 ECTS credits of additional courses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can find more information at the department for studies, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/htu.at\/AuRef\">HTU office for foreign students<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"I_have_completed_a_university_course_UniversitatslehrgangLehrgang_mit_universitaren_Charakter_Can_I_enroll_for_a_doctoral_programme_at_the_TU_Wien\"><\/span><a><\/a>I have completed a university course (Universit\u00e4tslehrgang\/Lehrgang mit universit\u00e4ren Charakter). Can I enroll for a doctoral programme at the TU Wien?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This has to be decided on a case-by-case basis. Univ.-Prof., a. o. Univ.-Prof., Assoc.-Prof. or Priv. Doz) at the TU Wien, proving the willingness to be your supervisor (Betreuungszusage).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_does_a_suspension_of_studies_%E2%80%9CBeurlaubung%E2%80%9D_work\"><\/span><a><\/a>How does a suspension of studies (&#8220;Beurlaubung&#8221;) work?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You have to apply no later than four weeks into the semester (sometime at the end of October or March, respectively). There is a form available at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tuwien.at\/en\/tu-wien\/organisation\/central-divisions\/admission-office\">department for<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tuwien.at\/en\/tu-wien\/organisation\/service-providers\/admission-office\/\"> studies<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you have suspended your studies, you do not have to pay any tuition fees. On the other hand, you are not allowed to do any exams. You do not change to the newest curriculum once you resume your studies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Do_I_have_to_remain_enroled_in_the_doctoral_programme_for_the_whole_duration_of_my_studies\"><\/span>Do I have to remain enroled in the doctoral programme for the whole duration of my studies?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>No. You only have to be enrolled when starting your studies, at the point of your defense and whenever you want to take an exam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Note that when you re-enroll, you automatically switch to the currently valid curriculum.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are not enrolled there might occure the following disadvantages (without claiming completeness):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>You won&#8217;t get E-Mails\/Mails regarding your studies.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You are not allowed to vote the student representation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If the curriculum is changed while you are not enrolled, some of your work might be lost\/useless, due to changes in the curriculum.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Your thesis agreement might not be valid any more.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You don&#8217;t have any access to services by the university (like access to buildings, journals and file servers).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Conference fees may be perceptible more expensive.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You are not included in the insurance by the Austrian Students&#8217; Association.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You don&#8217;t have any actuall student card, which might be needed for some discounts.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You might need it for residence title for specific purposes (like visa).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Is_it_possible_to_work_beside_the_doctoral_programme\"><\/span><a><\/a>Is it possible to work beside the doctoral programme?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Yes, if you are able to complete the the required coursework worth 18 ECTS credits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Note however that a doctoral thesis, particularly in technical science, is&nbsp;<em>typically three years of full-time work<\/em>. This means that working on it part-time and\/or irregularily might lengthen this process significantly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Do_I_have_the_intellectual_rights_in_case_of_an_invention\"><\/span><a><\/a>Do I have the intellectual rights in case of an invention?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are employed at TU Wien, the employer has to be informed about the invention. Currently, a one-time invention bonus as well as 35% from the&nbsp;net revenues are reserved for the inventor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If TU Wien has no interest in the invention, private utilization is possible.
