Employment at TU Wien
You can be employed as an assistant at the university during the duration of study. It depends on your supervisor and his or her research projects if this is possible. The modality of employment depends on the type of the financing research project and the habits of the institute and accordingly the research group. See Employment for more details about the different types of employment.
In case that you don’t have a supervisor there are several possibilities to look for offered thesis subjects including an employment. For example:
- at the database for offered theses, at “Extended Search”,
- on the website of the Career Center,
- on the websites of the institutes and research groups (the websites can be found on the sites of each faculty in TISS – each website of the institutes contains the information about the research groups of the institutes) and
- in the university gazette of the TU Wien.
Beside the research for your doctoral thesis, you may be expected to do teaching, administrative work and other research not related to your thesis. Doctoral candidates having an employment contract are paid according to the collective bargaining agreement for university staff.

Other Financial Support
TU Wien supports doctoral candidates in different ways. There is for example the Funding Programme for temporary early-stage researchers WINA+. This programme offers the possibility of participation in workshops and the support of young researchers. An other example is the support for conferences or research leave. Such a support is managed by the International Office of the TU Wien. The third example is support from your faculty. Some faculties support their doctoral candidates. Please ask your dean’s office for further information.
