Budget cuts hit doctoral researchers first!
The government is discussing a university budget of €15.5 billion for 2028–2030, while universities calculate that €18 billion would be needed just to maintain current teaching, research, staff, and infrastructure.
This means fewer positions, expiring fixed-term contracts, hiring freezes, worse supervision, fewer courses, and pressure on labs and research groups.
For doctoral students, this is existential. Our work depends on functioning institutes, supervisors, labs, teaching structures, and funded positions.
